The route recommended by the AA is 115 miles long and takes around 2¼ hours. The route takes you up to the M25 and out on the M20. Alternatively, you can go along the coast on the A259. The distance is shorter (96 miles) but the journey takes a bit longer (2½ hours). Here’s the AA route:

1. Take your preferred route to the A23 / M23 and head towards London.

2. Leave the M23 at Junction 8 and join the M25.

3. Travel anti-clockwise (signposted Dartford Crossing) as far as Junction 5 (M26, Dover).

4. Stay on the M26 until it merges with the M20.

5. Leave the M20 at junction 11. At the roundabout, take the third exit onto the B2608, signposted Hastings and Hythe.

6. Approx ¾ mile later, at roundabout, take the first exit onto the A20 (signposted Hastings and Hythe).

7. Approx ¾ mile later, turn left onto the A261 (still signposted Hastings and Hythe).

8. Two miles later, continue forward on the A2008 then, at traffic signals, turn right onto the A259. Approx 100 yards later, turn left onto Fort Road.
