Bognor 2 Maidstone United 0

3rd December 2011

Bognor secured another clean sheet, helped by a brace from Jason Prior, who scored a goal in each half at a tense game at Nyewood Lane.

Rocks were without Terry Dodd through a hamstring injury but were otherwise unchanged from their previous 6-0 demolition of Godalming Town in midweek.

The game got off to a flyer in front of the 601 strong crowd. Inside the first minute, good work from Prior and James Crane allowed Steve Harper to pass forward to Ben Johnson. The winger?s cross couldn?t find Prior in the box as Daren Hawkes got their first. The goalkeeper had to receive treatment after the incident as he clashed with the player.

Harper then won a free kick after Johnson set him up just outside the box. Johnson?s cross from the free kick was deflected clear by Danny Lye.

On just 6 minutes Crane had the ball in the net after he had slid in to try and win the ball off Hawkes, who went to ground to gather. But the referee had already blown for a free kick for a foul on the goalkeeper.

Then Johnson?s right-sided cross was aimed at Crane on the back post but Tom Osborne got there first to head back to his goalkeeper from close range.

The Stones? first attack came down the right flank as Baff Addae beat his marker down the other end, but his cross fell straight into the arms of Craig Stoner.

After just 9 minutes on the field, Ben Andrews had to come off through injury. Chris Breach who slotted in beside Stuart Axten in defence replaced him.

Sam Bewick then latched onto a failed right-sided cross. He tried himself to cross into the box, this time from the left and found Alex Waugh in the box. However, the striker headed wide.

Addae then won a corner for the visitors. The short kick fell to Ellis Green, who from the edge of the area fired his shot straight at Stoner.

On 15 minutes, Dan Beck managed to win another free kick in a similar position to earlier. Harper?s curling cross was headed high by Axten but Hawkes eventually gathered it before the defender rose to try again.

5 minutes later Johnson went to ground on the left and won a free kick. Johnson?s cross from it was decent but Harper appeared to be pulled back by a defender inside the area ? though appeals were ignored by the referee.

James Pinnock caused problems moments later when he ran down the byline but as he approached the goal Bognor defenders just managed to keep him out. Though the resulting corner fell to Pinnock again who beat his marker before striking low from a tight angle, forcing Stoner to use his legs to divert the ball away.

Then Crane?s cross was just too much for Johnson in the area, as he failed to get his head to it.

Harper?s corner kick fell to Crane on the edge of the area. Crane let fly with a shot but Osborne slid in, causing a deflection that spun the ball over the bar.

On 32 minutes Johnson squared the ball to Crane. The forward-thinking player hit his shot low but it was gathered comfortably by Hawkes.

But Rocks would take the lead just 3 minutes later. A neat through ball set up Harper. With just the goalkeeper to beat, the striker?s shot was blocked by the outstretched left leg of Hawkes. The deflection fell to Crane. Crane then directed the ball back across the area where Prior was waiting to smash home with his right boot.

Seconds later Harper skied another shot from distance well over the bar.

Maidstone hardly came close from a free kick in the Rocks half on 42 minutes. Michael Phillips? lofted forward ball found no one in the box.

In first half stoppage time, Crane did well to reach the ball before cutting back to Johnson to cross but it went just beyond the back post and cleared.

HT 1-0

The second half started at a fierce pace, with Bognor taking the initiative in the first 10 minutes.

On 55 minutes Prior swung his boot at the ball on the rise, but it swerved wide of the right post.

Addae did well to outpace Beck down the right but his flash of a cross flew across the face of goal before going off for a goal kick.

Stones then hit Rocks on the counter as Bewick thread Green in on the right. Green then crossed high into the box for Pinnock but Axten rose as well to deflect it away for a corner.

Johnson then lost the ball in midfield but Addae?s attempt at a cross swung well over the bar.

Kane Wills? chipped forward pass aimed at Prior was inadvertently headed at Hawkes by Lye, spurring gasps from the crowd.

Prior ran onto a long pass down the right channel as Lye failed to control it. Though as the striker came towards the box he chose to thread in Johnson on the run but it was too much for him.

A Johnson corner forced Hawkes into a one-handed save but it wasn?t enough as the ball was deflected away off the line by Tommy Mills.

With around 20 minutes left, Stoner was under pressure from a multitude of corners but he finally managed to gather a cross from Bewick as Waugh failed to get there first.

Addae then clashed off the ball with Axten before a goal kick and appeared to go to ground easily, spurring complaints from the home fans. He required treatment from the physio.

Rocks fans were left further bemused by the decision to award a free kick against Beck as frustration grew at Nyewood Lane.

Wills ran through towards goal and eventually played in Prior, who would have been disappointed to see his shot deflect off the back of team mate Harper and off for a goal kick.

Stones perhaps had their best chance of the half soon after when Waugh looped a header, directed just below the bar, but Stoner managed to save it confidently.

Rocks got that all-important second goal on 78 minutes. Prior slid in on a low Johnson cross to net his and Bognor?s second and final goal of the day.

But chances still came in the final 10 minutes. Crane ran in on a long ball down the right and was tripped by Lye, who received a yellow card. Many would argue it could have been a sending-off offence as the player was the last man. Johnson took the free kick from the corner edge of the box with his left boot ? curling his shot narrowly over the bar.

Crane beat Mills to the ball before passing back to Beck, but the midfielder smashed well over disappointingly from 25 yards.

Bewick then hit a shot on the bounce in an ambitious attempt but it bounced well wide of the right post.

The last clear attempt for the Rocks came when Crane, again involved, set up Harper. The striker spun instantly before shooting. Though his effort sailed narrowly over the bar.

That?s 8 goals in 2 consecutive games for the Rocks, without conceding any. They will hope to continue this good form against Faversham Town this Tuesday 6th December kick off 7.45pm at Nyewood Lane.
